The government stated that hundreds of children from mixed marriages between Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals have applied to become Indonesian citizens.

As reported by ANTARA, Thursday (26/2/2026), the Director General of General Legal Administration (Dirjen AHU), Widodo, explained that currently there are 714 children from mixed marriages who are in the process of applying to become Indonesian citizens.

Last year, there were also foreign nationals who wanted to become Indonesian citizens, and the number is considered to have increased over the past five years.

“In 2024, out of 165 new applications, 20 were accepted; and in 2025, there were 147 applications, with only two being fully processed and accepted as Indonesian citizens,” said Widodo in a press conference in Jakarta.

In 2021, there were 63 applications, of which 61 were accepted.

In 2020, there were 37 applications to become Indonesian citizens, but only 29 were accepted.

“The data at the Directorate General of AHU, specifically in the Directorate of State Affairs which handles citizenship matters, shows that in recent years, including 2026, 2025, and the past few years, the demand and interest in becoming Indonesian citizens has been quite high,” said Widodo.

The reasons they conveyed during the interview sessions were also varied. It was not only limited to economic issues, but also socio-cultural aspects, such as being impressed by the friendliness of Indonesian people and the environment, and wanting to spend the rest of their lives here.

“This shows how much foreign nationals love Indonesia and want to become Indonesian citizens, and of course, we should be proud of those who have become Indonesian citizens, and we will certainly maintain and love Indonesia as it is,” said Widodo.
