Gotion to build 2 GWh solid-state battery factory to support electric vehicle launch in 2026
Gotion High-Tech, a battery company backed by Volkswagen, has announced plans to build a solid-state battery factory with a capacity of 2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) as a technological innovation for next-generation electric vehicles.
According to Carnewschina on Monday (2 March) local time, the battery to be produced is the Jinshi solid-state battery with a sulphide-based solid electrolyte, designed to increase energy density and safety.
According to technical specifications, the Jinshi battery achieves cell energy density of up to 350 Wh/kg, approximately 40 per cent higher than mainstream lithium ternary cells, enabling electric vehicles to achieve a range of approximately 1,000 kilometres per charge.
Gotion has previously operated a 0.2 GWh all-solid-state battery pilot line with a production yield rate of approximately 90 per cent, using core equipment fully developed domestically and tested in on-road vehicle installation trials.
The company targets the 2 GWh production line to support the launch of small-scale electric vehicles with solid-state batteries by late 2026, whilst full mass production is expected to increase in the following decade.
Investment support and cooperation from Volkswagen are key elements of the strategy, including plans to supply solid-state batteries to Volkswagen and Audi brands in the future.
