Google has officially rolled out the end-to-end encryption (E2EE) feature for its Gmail service on Android and iOS mobile devices. However, this feature is not yet available to all users. According to KompasTekno citing Bleeping Computer, Google is limiting access to Gmail mobile E2EE for certain Google Workspace customers, such as Enterprise Plus, as well as organisations that have activated encryption settings through their admin. With this update, users can now send and read encrypted emails directly from the Gmail app without needing additional applications. This launch is an extension of the similar feature that was previously only available on the web version. Now, users can access highly protected emails directly from their phones, supporting the increasingly mobile nature of work. In its official announcement, Google stated that for the first time, users can “write and read E2EE messages directly within the Gmail app on Android and iOS” without requiring additional applications. Google also confirmed that users with an E2EE licence can send encrypted emails to any address, not limited to fellow Gmail users. Recipients using Gmail will see the messages as usual in their inbox, while non-Gmail users can access them via a browser with a special security system. To activate this feature, users simply need to tap the lock icon when composing an email and select the additional encryption option. This step reaffirms Google’s focus on improving digital communication security, particularly for companies and organisations handling sensitive data. With the arrival of E2EE on mobile devices, Gmail now offers more consistent protection across various platforms.
