Google Play Now Similar to Steam, Enabling PC Gaming and Trial Downloads Before Purchase
Google has announced a series of major updates for the gaming ecosystem within Google Play at the 2026 Game Developers Conference (GDC).
Through new features such as cross-device purchasing, paid game trials, and support for Android games on PC, Google Play is beginning to function as a digital game distribution platform similar to Steam.
With these changes, users are no longer limited to playing Android games on smartphones. Games purchased from the Play Store can now be played on various devices, including computers through Google Play Games for Windows.
This move is part of Google’s strategy to expand the Play Store gaming ecosystem beyond focusing solely on mobile devices, extending to cross-platform gaming experiences similar to those offered by PC gaming platforms.
Under this system, players can purchase games from the Play Store and play them on both Android smartphones and PCs through Google Play Games for Windows.
Game progress will be saved in user profiles and automatically synchronised across devices. This means users can resume playing from their last checkpoint even when switching from mobile to computer.
Google states that this feature is expected to simplify gaming for players who wish to play across multiple devices without having to purchase the same game repeatedly.
In addition to cross-platform purchasing, Google has also introduced the Game Trials feature.
This feature allows users to try paid games for free within a limited time period before deciding to purchase them.
Should players eventually purchase the game, the progress made during the trial period can be continued without needing to start from the beginning.
This feature is expected to help players familiarise themselves with games before making a purchase.
In the same announcement, Google has also expanded support for Android games on computers through Google Play Games on PC.
