Google Introduces Voice-Based AI Features in Gmail, Docs, and Keep

Google is once again expanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within its everyday services. The company has introduced voice-based features that allow users to speak directly to Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Keep to search for information, create documents, and organise notes.

These features, named Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live, began rolling out on 3 September 2026, following their initial introduction at the Google I/O 2026 event. All three features utilise Gemini technology to understand conversation more naturally, meaning users do not need to use specific command formats.

Through Gmail Live, users can query information stored in their inbox simply by speaking. Instead of typing keywords and sifting through numerous emails, users can ask questions using everyday language. Gemini then searches for relevant information from the emails and provides an answer. Users can also ask follow-up questions or interrupt the conversation to narrow down the information sought. Gmail Live also displays conversation transcripts and the email sources used to generate the answers.

Meanwhile, Docs Live is designed as an assistant for creating and developing documents. Users only need to convey ideas orally, including the intended purpose and format of the document. Gemini can then assist in organising those ideas into a document structure and an initial draft. With user permission, Docs Live can also use information from Gmail, Google Drive, Google Chat, or the web as additional context.

Google Keep receives the Keep Live feature, which functions to capture various thoughts or information spontaneously. Users can perform a ‘brain dump’, conveying many points orally without needing to worry about the arrangement of notes beforehand. Gemini then helps transform these into more structured notes, including lists or checklists. This method allows users to record ideas while travelling or performing other activities without having to stop to type.

The three features are becoming available globally in English for mobile device users, though access depends on the specific Google AI subscription type. Gmail Live is available to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers on Android and iOS. Docs Live is available to Pro and Ultra subscribers on Android and iOS, while Keep Live is currently available on Android for Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google has stated that these features will also be made available to Google Workspace business customers.

This launch demonstrates Google’s move to ensure AI is not merely a chatbot, but an assistant integrated directly into user activities. With a conversation-based approach, tasks such as searching for emails, drafting documents, and creating notes can be performed more practically without relying entirely on a keyboard.
