Golkar Urges Prompt Discussion of Election Bill, Unconcerned About Who Initiates It
“My concern is that the sooner it is discussed, the better. The question of who takes the initiative is not an issue,” said Doli when contacted on Thursday (7/5/2026). Doli does not take issue with whether the DPR or the government takes the initiative. According to him, that is just a matter of agreement. “It could be the DPR, or it could be the government. And usually, in the discussion of a law, it starts with an agreement between the government and the DPR. When the discussion will begin and who will take the initiative. Especially since this Election Law is a major, important, and strategic law, there needs to be consensus between the government and the DPR,” he stated. He mentioned that the executive and legislative branches currently have the same configuration. Both institutions are filled with party leaders. “So we are just waiting for discussions at the level of political party leaders, especially the coalition supporting the government, whose coalition chair is the president. If consensus is reached, the DPR, as the extension of political parties, will follow it. And who will take the initiative becomes just a technical matter,” he said. Nevertheless, he could not confirm whether the bill could be discussed after the DPR’s recess period. “It depends on the political agreement among party leaders,” he added. Draft of the Election Bill Already Prepared Previously, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that it has prepared a draft for discussing the Election Bill. This draft is prepared in case the DPR invites them at any time to discuss the Election Bill. “If the Ministry of Home Affairs is ready, because we process this with our partners at Bappenas, as well as universities that provide input, research institutions, and so on. And currently, it is led by the Director General of Political and Public Administration,” explained Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya to reporters at his office on Monday (27/4). “We have prepared the substances to anticipate all possible developments in the DPR. The important thing is that we have the draft ready, the government’s views, the list of problem inventories, and what the strategic issues are. So whenever the political process requires it, we are ready,” he added.
