Golkar and ABRI

I read with interest Sudomo's comment in Merdeka (Oct. 16,
1995) concerning the relationship between the Armed Forces (ABRI)
and Golkar. Clarification of this relationship is of great
importance because it will give the younger generation a clear
idea of the history of the nation. It was said that ABRI and
Golkar have a shared history.

According to Maj. Gen. Syarwan Hamid, the Armed Forces' social
political assistant, ABRI cannot be neutral in relation to the
three sociopolitical organizations, and the link between ABRI and
Golkar is best explained in terms of their historical similarity,
i.e., ABRI came into being on Oct. 5, 1945 and so did Golkar.
