Indonesians often consider goat meat harmful for those suffering from hypertension and high cholesterol. However, despite this negative reputation, it is rich in protein and essential nutrients. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that goat meat has long been blamed for causing cholesterol and hypertension due to high saturated fat content. However, he said, compared to beef, goat meat actually has much lower saturated fat. “Goat meat contains 0.8g of saturated fat per 100g, compared to 3g in beef,” he said, quoted on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. According to him, many hospitalisations due to hypertension and high cholesterol after eating goat meat are due to cooking methods. He explained that goat meat dishes often use excessive salt and coconut milk. “The problem is not the meat itself, but the cooking method,” he said. Meanwhile, according to Very Well, moderate consumption of goat meat – three portions a week – can support a healthy diet. Goat meat contains beneficial amino acids and is rich in monounsaturated fats (MUFA) and omega-3 polyunsaturated fats (PUFA), healthy fats that help manage cholesterol levels.
