A global shortage of computer memory (RAM) has become a primary topic discussed by game developers at the Game Developers Conference 2026 (GDC 2026). This was revealed in a report by gaming media outlet Polygon, which participated in the discussions. The RAM shortage topic was stated to emerge frequently in conversations amongst the game developers attending this year’s GDC.

“If you don’t start the conversation about this, someone else will do it first,” said Polygon journalist Giovanni Colantonio in his report.

According to the report, numerous developers view the RAM crisis as potentially transformative for how games are developed across the industry.

This is evident from the extensive discussions on game optimisation across various panels at GDC 2026. These optimisations aim to ensure developer-created games can continue running on PCs with more limited RAM capacity. This approach is being pursued to enable games to be played by a wider pool of PC users, particularly as many gamers are expected not to upgrade their RAM in the near future.

Beyond optimisation, several developers at GDC 2026 have also predicted that the RAM shortage could result in future games featuring more loading screens. This mechanism could make RAM usage more efficient, as games would not need to load all visual assets into memory simultaneously. Instead, data would be loaded gradually as players transition between different game areas.

Regarding game visuals, several developers believe the RAM crisis could serve as an opportunity to reassess the gaming industry’s direction, which has long prioritised pursuing high-end graphics. Based on several panel discussions at GDC 2026, some developers have argued that the push for increasingly realistic visuals may not be sustainable if hardware requirements continue to escalate.

Beyond game development, the memory crisis has also sparked speculation about the future of the next generation of gaming consoles. In various conversations amongst developers attending GDC, speculation has emerged that next-generation console prices could be considerably higher than current devices.
