GitLab, a software company, will undertake a business restructuring and plans to streamline its workforce through layoffs.

This step is taken in line with the company’s efforts to transform into a leading software development platform in the age of AI.

However, GitLab management asserts that this workforce reduction policy is not solely for cost efficiency.

GitLab CEO, Bill Staples, stated that the restructuring carried out by his company differs from the wave of AI-based layoffs currently occurring in the technology industry.

“This restructuring process is not like what you might see in the news. AI is indeed changing the way we work and is part of the transformation, but this is not an AI optimization or cost reduction effort,” Staples said in its official statement.

According to him, the funds saved from workforce reductions will be reallocated for business development investments, especially in AI-based infrastructure and technology.

Such as a dedicated AI agent API, CI/CD system updates, context-based data models, governance, and support for workloads involving both humans and autonomous AI agents.

According to The Register, GitLab is also offering “voluntary” layoff options and streamlining its organizational structure.

The company believes that the current management structure is too complex, with eight layers of organization deemed to slow down decision-making.

“We are streamlining the organization because deep management layers are slowing us down,” said Staples.

GitLab also plans to reduce its global operations by cutting the number of countries where the company has small teams by 30 percent. Currently, GitLab operates in approximately 60 countries.

Management is also asking managers to discuss directly with employees about their roles going forward, including the possibility of staying or leaving the company.

However, there are no official criteria yet regarding which employees will be affected by this policy.

Based on data from analytics company Unify, GitLab is estimated to have around 1,800 employees, most of whom are located outside the United States.

This restructuring is being carried out amid business pressures faced by GitLab, including slowing customer growth due to price increases for premium services of up to 50 percent in recent years.

This condition is exacerbated by the increasing use of AI-based development tools and relatively stagnant SaaS budgets.

In the future, GitLab will also increasingly rely on the Duo Agent Platform (DAP) to support the integration of AI in the software development process.
