JAKARTA — Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka visibly reacted with a start when the first volley of honour shots was fired during the military funeral procession of Indonesia’s 6th Vice President Try Sutrisno on Monday, 2 March 2026.

The incident occurred shortly after President Prabowo Subianto delivered the ceremonial Apel Persada address, marking the culmination of the funeral procession at the Heroes’ Cemetery (Taman Makam Pahlawan).

Speaking with a clear voice, Prabowo paid tribute to the deceased’s service and dedication to the nation. “I, as President of the Republic of Indonesia, on behalf of the state, nation, and Indonesian Armed Forces, hereby present to the Motherland the soul, body, and services of the deceased,” Prabowo said at Kalibata Heroes’ Cemetery on Monday afternoon.

“Try Sutrisno, 6th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the period 1993–1998, Commander of the Armed Forces for the period 1988–1993. Son of the late Subandi, who departed this life in the service and honour of the state and nation on Monday, 2 March 2026 at 06:58 Western Indonesian Time in Jakarta,” Prabowo continued.

“May the path of devotion he has undertaken serve as an example for us all, and may his soul find the best place beside the Almighty God,” he said.

The atmosphere of the ceremony was solemn and respectful. Lines of Indonesian military personnel stood at attention, whilst mourners and state officials filled the cemetery grounds.

The master of ceremonies then guided the subsequent procession. “Pallbearers, assume your positions,” the ceremony director announced through loudspeakers.

Shortly after, the director’s voice returned: “Prepare for the lowering of the casket into the grave. Honour guard, take your positions. Attendants unfurl the Red and White flag at chest height. Those present are requested to stand.”

Silence enveloped the location. Only the sound of officials’ footsteps and a gentle breeze could be heard.

“The final honours to the deceased are being led by the Ceremony Commander,” the master of ceremonies announced.
