Gibran Chairs Flood-Response Coordination in Tuban, Orders Immediate Restoration of Public Facilities
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.COM - Vice President (Wapres) Gibran Rakabuming chaired a coordination meeting (rakor) on flood management with regional governments and stakeholders at the office of PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk in Tuban Regency, East Java Province, on Friday (6 March 2026). In his remarks, Gibran urged that public facilities affected by the floods be restored promptly so that people can resume normal activities. ‘Public facilities affected by the floods such as schools and places of worship must be operational again as soon as possible,’ Gibran said in a statement on Friday. Gibran also emphasised the importance of accelerating the response to flood impacts.
This meeting is a follow-up to instructions by President Prabowo Subianto for the central and regional governments to act quickly in addressing the disaster’s impacts. In addition, the Vice President highlighted the condition of roads affected and damaged by floods. He called for repairs to be carried out urgently, including the repair of drainage systems around the roads. ‘The connecting road Ngino–Sambongrejo, which is damaged, should be repaired immediately, including the drainage systems around the road to prevent disruption to residents’ activities and logistics distribution,’ he said.
Moreover, Gibran reminded regional governments to anticipate potential post-flood disease outbreaks. According to him, preventive measures need to be taken seriously given that extreme weather conditions still have the potential to occur. ‘Anticipate possible post-flood disease outbreaks such as diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis, and dengue fever (DHF),’ he urged. He referred to data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) relating to extreme weather that may persist until the end of March.
The eldest son of the seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), also asked the regional governments to remain on alert. He emphasised the need for long-term mitigation measures, for example through more systematic handling to prevent floods from recurring in the Tuban region. ‘Pay attention to governance and improve drainage systems, conduct regular dredging of rivers that have become silted,’ he asserted.
