MICHIGAN — Four people were reported dead after a tornado tore through Union Lake, Michigan, United States. The tornado struck on Friday afternoon, 6 March 2026.

In a terrifying scene, a giant funnel cloud descended from the sky, sweeping everything in its path. The tornado demolished houses to rubble, ripped trees from their roots, and hurled roof fragments into the air like paper.

‘That tornado lifted houses!’ cried Lisa Piper, a local resident, as she filmed the horror from the rear deck of her home. ‘My heart is racing. Oh, I hope they are alright.’

The Branch County Sheriff’s Office reported three dead and 12 others injured in the Union Lake area. Meanwhile, 80 kilometres to the southwest, Cass County officials reported one additional fatality. Four lives were lost in southern Michigan in just minutes as the tornado ripped through the neighbourhood.

This storm was no accident. David Roth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS), explained that Michigan was in a ‘perfect’ setup for this disaster. A weather system drew warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico northward, which then collided with much colder air masses over the Great Lakes region.

The collision of the two air masses created violent turbulence. Although Michigan averages only about 15 tornadoes per year — far fewer than Texas (155) or Kansas (96) — the power of this tornado demonstrated that statistics do not guarantee safety.
