Plans for the construction of the giant sea wall continue to progress. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has outlined its developments.

Deputy Minister of KKP Didit Herdiawan Ashaf stated that the government is currently conducting research and analysis on the giant sea wall project. The sea wall is planned to be built in the middle of the sea off the north coast of Java or Pantura Jawa.

“It will be built in the middle of the sea. About four to six kilometres from the shoreline,” said Didit in Surabaya on Friday, 24 April 2026.

Didit, who also serves as Head of the North Java Coast Management Authority, explained that construction is planned to take place soon. Primarily after the construction of the Fishermen’s Villages, which is President Prabowo’s priority programme.

“Because there are two programmes within it (giant sea wall), there is the groundbreaking for the programme and groundbreaking for infrastructure. They must proceed together,” Didit said.

In addition, Didit outlined the progress of the Merah Putih Fishermen’s Villages in East Java. According to him, Fishermen’s Villages are already established in Gresik, Malang Regency, Tuban, Pasuruan, and Sumenep. “There will be various types, some as hubs (centres) and their supports,” Didit explained.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Office (DKP) of East Java, Muhammad Isa Anshori, explained that the Fishermen’s Villages are integrated with various facilities such as ports, cold storage (fish storage), and fishermen’s kiosks. All these facilities aim to optimise fishermen’s work.

According to Isa, the East Java Provincial Government has proposed 40 Fishermen’s Villages for construction. “It will depend on field verification. Whether all 40 are feasible to build or not,” Isa said.

Isa continued that the fishermen’s villages will be supervised and managed directly by four representatives from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. The budget for the Fishermen’s Villages varies between Rp 20-Rp 25 billion.
