The German government has responded to a call from US President Donald Trump requesting that American allies assist in securing shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blockaded by Iran. Germany stated that the conflict bears no connection to NATO operations.

“This war has nothing to do with NATO. This is not a NATO war,” said Friedrich Merz, spokesman for the German Chancellor, according to CNN on Monday, 16 March 2026.

The comment came after Trump made veiled threats against the NATO alliance. Trump stated that NATO countries would face a difficult future if they did not join the effort against Iran at the Strait of Hormuz.

The German government has confirmed that it will not participate in any activities at the Strait of Hormuz. “Participation was not considered before this war and is not being considered now,” the government spokesman added.

Upon arrival in Brussels this morning, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also told reporters that he does not see a role for NATO members at the Strait of Hormuz.

Merz has hardened Germany’s position in recent days as the conflict with Iran continues to show no signs of ending. Last week he criticised the United States for easing sanctions against Russia and openly stated that he does not understand US plans to end the war.

German Chancellor Merz will meet with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten in Berlin today. Both leaders are likely to address questions about their response to Trump and his demands.

Trump’s Call for Allies to Help Secure the Strait of Hormuz

In a brief interview with the Financial Times on Sunday, 15 March, Trump said the NATO military alliance could face a “very difficult” future if US allies do not help Washington reopen the strategic shipping route.

Trump also threatened to delay his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled for later this month, as an effort to pressure Beijing to help secure traffic through the Strait.

“It is only right that countries benefiting from the Strait should help ensure that nothing bad happens there,” Trump told the newspaper.
