Germany considers joining mine-clearing mission in Strait of Hormuz
Moscow (ANTARA) - Germany is likely to join efforts to secure shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf region after the conflict ends, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said on Thursday.
“We might also be involved in operations in the Strait of Hormuz. For example, if it concerns clearing mines or similar missions,” Dobrindt told ARD broadcaster.
The minister echoed Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s statement that the conflict in the Middle East is “not Germany’s war.”
“We are not part of it. We were not consulted beforehand. We are not involved… Germany can stay out of this situation,” he added.
Regarding migration prospects, Dobrindt said the future situation remains uncertain, but noted that there has been no surge in migration from Iran.
On 14 March, US President Donald Trump called on China, France, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and other countries to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz to ensure navigation security.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that European Union countries are not yet ready to send a fleet to the region.
On 28 February, the US and Israel launched attacks on several targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties.
Iran responded by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East in self-defence.
