German national dies

On Thursday, Aug. 3, 1995, Guenther Fust, a German national,
aged 85 years, passed away peacefully in his home on Pulau
Kaliage Besar in the Thousand Islands. Fust had been an invalid,
after a series of strokes over the past five years.

Mr. Fust came to Indonesia in the early 1950s to head Hoechst
Pharmaceuticals. Since his retirement in the mid 1960s, he has
lived permanently on Pulau Kaliage Besar. In this period, he made
continual contributions towards the medical care of the people of
Pulau Kelapa and also donated to the building of the main mosque
on that island.

In recognition of his assistance to the Jakarta Offshore
Sailing Club (JOSC), Fust was made an Honorary Life Member of
JOSC. Each year, the JOSC holds a sailing race from Tanjung Priok
to Kaliage. As a result, Kaliage has been a favored destination
of yachtsmen worldwide.

Mr. Fust was noted for his hospitality. Senior members of the
Indonesian government, such as the late Adam Malik, former Vice
President, were regular visitors to Kaliage. As Fust was a
beneficial owner of Kaliage, many Jakarta residents, both
Indonesian and expatriates, built weekend bungalows there.

It was Fust's final wish that Kaliage remain unchanged, with
rental proceeds used to benefit the people of nearby Kelapa and
to protect the marine environment of the Thousand Islands. To
implement this end, Fust founded a Yayasan. Also, as was well
known, he wished to be buried on Kaliage. Regrettably, the latter
did not happen and he was buried on Kelapa in the public
cemetery.

He is survived by his elder sister Elizabeth Brendel-Fust of
Ploen, Germany, and her children; and many friends in the
Thousand Islands, Jakarta and worldwide.
