German national dies<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Aug. 3, 1995, Guenther Fust, a German national,
\naged 85 years, passed away peacefully in his home on Pulau
\nKaliage Besar in the Thousand Islands. Fust had been an invalid,
\nafter a series of strokes over the past five years.<\/p>\n
Mr. Fust came to Indonesia in the early 1950s to head Hoechst
\nPharmaceuticals. Since his retirement in the mid 1960s, he has
\nlived permanently on Pulau Kaliage Besar. In this period, he made
\ncontinual contributions towards the medical care of the people of
\nPulau Kelapa and also donated to the building of the main mosque
\non that island.<\/p>\n
In recognition of his assistance to the Jakarta Offshore
\nSailing Club (JOSC), Fust was made an Honorary Life Member of
\nJOSC. Each year, the JOSC holds a sailing race from Tanjung Priok
\nto Kaliage. As a result, Kaliage has been a favored destination
\nof yachtsmen worldwide.<\/p>\n
Mr. Fust was noted for his hospitality. Senior members of the
\nIndonesian government, such as the late Adam Malik, former Vice
\nPresident, were regular visitors to Kaliage. As Fust was a
\nbeneficial owner of Kaliage, many Jakarta residents, both
\nIndonesian and expatriates, built weekend bungalows there.<\/p>\n
It was Fust's final wish that Kaliage remain unchanged, with
\nrental proceeds used to benefit the people of nearby Kelapa and
\nto protect the marine environment of the Thousand Islands. To
\nimplement this end, Fust founded a Yayasan. Also, as was well
\nknown, he wished to be buried on Kaliage. Regrettably, the latter
\ndid not happen and he was buried on Kelapa in the public
\ncemetery.<\/p>\n
He is survived by his elder sister Elizabeth Brendel-Fust of
\nPloen, Germany, and her children; and many friends in the
\nThousand Islands, Jakarta and worldwide.<\/p>\n
