Mercedes driver George Russell secured pole position for the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix after setting the fastest time in the final moments of qualifying on Sunday (24/5), edging out teammate Kimi Antonelli by 0.068 seconds at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit.
Russell recorded a time of 1 minute 12.578 seconds to secure the front row start. This success also eased internal tensions at Mercedes after the two drivers had a disagreement during the previous sprint race.
“We spoke well this morning. We’re both drivers and respect each other,” Russell was quoted by AFP.
Russell said car setup changes were key to his success, especially for potential wet conditions. “It’s amazing when the session is tough and you pull everything together on the last lap. That’s very epic,” he added.
Kimi Antonelli, starting second, acknowledged his teammate’s superiority despite leading early in the session. “George did a great lap at the end. Now we’ll see how the weather is, but we’ll be ready for anything,” Antonelli said.
Mercedes’ dominance at the front was followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris in third and Oscar Piastri in fourth. Lewis Hamilton, now with Ferrari, had to settle for fifth, just ahead of reigning champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who admitted confusion over his car’s performance.
