Ramadan is not only a part of worshiping Allah, but also a part of building harmony, building unity, especially Islamic brotherhood (ukhuwah Islamiyah), and national unity (ukhuwah wathaniah). Ramadan is a momentum to become better together, trying our best to fill it with various acts of worship as prescribed. This was conveyed by the Secretary-General of the PP Muhammadiyah, Abdul Mu’ti, while delivering a Tarawih lecture at the Al Falah Mosque, Bendungan Hilir, Sudirman, Central Jakarta, Monday (23/2/26).

Mu’ti explained the various virtues of Ramadan, including being often referred to as the month of forgiveness (syahru maghfirah). As narrated by Imam Bukhari from the companion Abu Hurairah, the Prophet Muhammad SAW said, “Whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and expecting reward, Allah will forgive his past sins” (HR. Bukhari no. 2014). Therefore, people are encouraged to increase their istighfar (seeking forgiveness) and recite the prescribed prayers. The prayer is: “O Allah, You are the Most Forgiving and Merciful, You love those who ask for forgiveness, so forgive our sins.” In addition, Ramadan is also called the month of fasting (syahru shiyam), in which fasting is obligatory, even though it is difficult, as stated in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 184. According to Mu’ti, fasting becomes easier because, in addition to doing it with sincerity, it is also done together.

Social Piety

Many things in the practice of worship are partly determined by the social environment. In the theory of religious sociology, this is called social piety or piety that comes from the environment in which we are. The atmosphere of fasting provides spiritual encouragement and mental strength to overcome various obstacles and difficulties. “If everyone at work is fasting, we will have the spirit to fast. Likewise, if everyone in the family is fasting, then our spirit of fasting will become even stronger,” Mu’ti exemplified.

Ramadan is also often called the month of the Quran (syahru Quran). According to Mu’ti, the month of the Quran has two meanings. First, the meaning in a historical perspective because the Quran was revealed in the month of Ramadan, referring to Surah Al-Baqarah verse 185. The Quran was first revealed on the 17th of Ramadan, which is commemorated as Nuzulul Quran, which prophetically marks the appointment of Muhammad as the Messenger of Allah. Second, the month of the Quran means a month to increase the recitation of the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad SAW in Ramadan always recited with Jibril, which then became a tradition of recitation until now.

According to Mu’ti, increasing the recitation is more emphasized on its frequency than just the amount. Reading the Quran will have a deeper spiritual influence if done with tartil, as commanded in Surah Al-Muzammil verse 4. “Reading the Quran slowly, with full devotion, and with full hope to gain guidance and goodness in our lives,” he explained.

Another virtue of Ramadan is that it is called the month of charity (syahru sadaqah). In a hadith, it is mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad was the most generous person, and his generosity increased in the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is also a month of brotherhood (syahru ukhuwah), filled with many social activities. According to Mu’ti, breaking the fast together originated from the practice of the Prophet’s hadith about the reward of feeding those who are breaking their fast. The tradition of breaking the fast together in Indonesia is even followed by people of different religions, which shows how much the teachings of Islam are celebrated by all. “In fact, breaking the fast together is a moment where everyone is happy,” he said.

Two Joys

A hadith of the Prophet states that those who fast will receive two joys: the joy when breaking the fast, and the joy when meeting their Lord (HR. Bukhari and Muslim). Therefore, Ramadan is a month of unity and harmony. “I think if we break the fast together, there are no questions like the group that sights the new moon or calculates it, there is no debate about who breaks the fast first, everyone is the same,” said Mu’ti, which made the congregation laugh.

At the Al Falah Mosque, Abdul Mu’ti also had the opportunity to witness a children’s coloring competition, inaugurate the Muhammadiyah Lazis Service Office, and participate in breaking the fast together. After the Tarawih prayer, Abdul Mu’ti, who now serves as the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, was surrounded by students who lined up to ask for his signature for their school assignments.
