GE-Tenaga gas turbine deal

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): General Electric (GE) of the United States
signed a partnership agreement yesterday with Malaysia's
electricity supplied Tenaga Nasional to maintain gas turbines
built by the American power supplies giant.

GE signed two agreements with Tenaga to transfer gas turbine
technology to the Malaysian company and jointly run a workshop to
service gas turbines in Malaysia's central Selangor state.

GE will provide Tenaga with engineering services and training,
both in Malaysia and in the U.S., officials said, with a GE
resident engineer stationed in the service center.

The two companies had last week announced a US$250-million
contract for GE to supply two 500 Megawatt steam turbine
generators and auxiliary equipment to Tenaga's plant in Selangor,
scheduled to begin operations in 1998.

With the technology transfer, "Malaysia will have the skills
and expertise to undertake sophisticated gas turbine repair
leading to the best service programs" Don Kusza, president of GE
Power Systems (South Asia Pacific), said.

Malaysia currently has 55 gas turbines either installed or on
order from GE.
