Danantara Indonesia, the state investment management agency, is currently examining various financing scheme options to realise plans for PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (GIAA) to purchase 50 aircraft units from Boeing. Rohan Hafas, Managing Director of Stakeholders Management at Danantara Indonesia, confirmed that the agency is prepared to proceed with the purchase of 50 aircraft units from Boeing, though discussions currently remain at the technical government level.

“This remains a technical discussion, meaning we are ready to purchase 50 units, but Boeing has not yet answered or will answer whether they can deliver 10 units, 20 units, etcetera,” Hafas said during an exclusive group interview at Wisma Danantara in Jakarta on Thursday 27 February 2026.

Hafas identified a key challenge in fleet procurement: delivery time from manufacturers, which could extend to seven years globally. He explained that aircraft selection must account for these lengthy delivery schedules, noting that as potential buyers who have not yet made payment, negotiating faster delivery times than the global average remains difficult.

Regarding potential funding sources for the 50-aircraft purchase, Hafas indicated multiple financing options are available, including supplier credit and direct instalments with Boeing. “Sources of funds can vary, but there is also supplier’s credit; we can also pay in instalments to Boeing. These are all negotiations that will need to take place,” he said.

The agency has not ruled out providing additional capital injections to Garuda Indonesia in the future to support the fleet expansion. In mid-2025, PT Danantara Asset Management (DAM) had allocated 23.67 trillion rupiah in capital injection to the national carrier.

Hafas suggested that a merger of Indonesian airlines could prove more efficient, allowing for optimised fleet deployment across routes whilst reducing the impact of global aircraft delivery constraints.

The aircraft purchase plan forms part of a broader trade agreement between Indonesia and the United States signed the previous week, titled “Toward a New Golden Age for the U.S.-Indonesia Alliance,” which includes provisions requiring Indonesia to procure commercial aircraft and aviation-related goods and services valued at 13.5 billion US dollars.

Investment Minister and Head of BKPM Rosan Perkasa Roeslani confirmed in a press conference from Washington DC on Friday 20 February 2026 that the 50-aircraft purchase from Boeing is one of several activities covered under the reciprocal tariff agreement involving both the Investment Ministry and Danantara.
