Garden set stolen

JAKARTA (JP): A set of cast-iron park benches and a table worth Rp 2.5 million (US$373) were stolen from the residence of the Ambassador of Yugoslavia in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.

Police said nothing else belonging to Ambassador Dusan Stojkovic and his family was taken by the thieves, and that several people had been questioned about the case, including the security officer, Mandar, who overslept while on duty when the incident took place.

Stojkovic said nobody in the house heard anything suspicious that night.

"We were shocked to find the antique-style benches and table were gone early in the morning. I had planned to send them to Yugoslavia within the next two days," he told The Jakarta Post.

The Menteng subdistrict is known as one of classiest residential area in the city, where many foreign diplomats stay.

"This area should be the most secure place in Central Jakarta. I am disappointed to find there is no security guarantee here, while there are so many security officers and guards around," Stojkovic said. (01)
