The Indonesian Online Motorcycle Taxi Drivers Association, Garda Indonesia, is urging the government to consider assigning a strategic role to Danantara to manage and integrate the national digital transportation ecosystem. This proposal is put forward alongside the anticipation of the issuance of a Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on online motorcycle taxis, which will regulate the 90:10 revenue-sharing scheme between drivers and platforms.

Garda Indonesia’s General Chairman, Raden Igun Wicaksono, in a written statement in Jakarta on Monday (13/4), stated that Danantara’s involvement is viewed as a progressive step to strengthen national digital economic sovereignty while creating a fairer balance between platforms, drivers, and the state. According to him, the online transportation sector has currently become the backbone of public mobility while supporting the economy of millions of informal workers in Indonesia.

However, he assessed that the current digital transportation business model still faces several structural challenges, such as imbalances in value distribution, uncertainty in social protection for drivers, and the dominance of platform algorithms that are not yet fully aligned with national interests.

Garda Indonesia believes that Danantara has the potential to become the orchestrator of the digital transportation ecosystem through a strong institutional approach. With that role, the management of the online transportation sector is expected not only to focus on market efficiency but also on social stability and economic sustainability.

The association mentioned that there are at least four main benefits if Danantara is involved in managing digital transportation. First, strengthening national control over data and digital infrastructure, so that the state has better control over the flow of data which is a strategic asset of the digital economy. Second, reformulating a fairer partnership scheme to improve drivers’ welfare. Third, stabilising the online transportation ecosystem through mitigating risks of tariff volatility and conflicts of interest. Fourth, optimising the contribution of this sector to the national economy, including its impact on MSMEs, logistics, and other informal sectors.

Raden Igun emphasised that the momentum of national digital transformation must be accompanied by the courage to take visionary policies. According to him, assigning Danantara is not merely a technocratic option, but a strategic step to ensure that Indonesia’s digital economic growth remains within the corridor of national interests.

Garda Indonesia, he continued, is ready to be a partner to the government in formulating inclusive, fair, and sustainable digital transportation policies. The association hopes that the government can respond to this proposal with concrete steps that favour the people and strengthen the nation’s economic sovereignty.
