Gang of matel Admit to Stealing Motorbike and Assaulting Rider in Kalideres, West Jakarta
A motorbike rider was assaulted and his vehicle seized by a gang who claimed to be mata elang (matel) or debt collectors in front of a tin can factory on Jalan Daan Mogot, Kalideres, West Jakarta, on Tuesday morning (3 March 2026).
In a video uploaded by the Instagram account @warga.jakbar, a man is seen sitting by the roadside, his clothes wet and dirty from the muddy water of the river.
The victim, who says he works as a security officer at Bank BSI Cisoka, Tangerang, lost his motorbike and all of his valuable belongings. However, he has not yet filed a police report about the incident.
“We are still investigating that first,” said Rihold when contacted by Kompas.com on Wednesday (4 March 2026). “The victim has not yet filed a report with Kalideres Police Station either.”)
To address public concern about the rise of premanism masquerading as matel in the Daan Mogot area, Rihold stressed that his team will tighten surveillance. “Our Opsnal Unit Reskrim team routinely conducts matel patrols, especially along Jalan Daan Mogot. Going forward, patrols will be intensified,” he said.
According to the Instagram account @warga.jakbar, the rider was passing through at dawn when four perpetrators on two motorcycles cornered him.
“While I was riding, two motorcycles suddenly overtook me — one in front, one behind. I nearly fell. They pulled my steering lock,” the victim said in the video, cited on Wednesday.
“They claimed I hadn’t paid for three months, even though I had just paid on the 28th,” he added.
Rather than listen to his explanation, the perpetrators began to intimidate him and used physical force.
The victim said he was interrogated, beaten, and finally pushed into the river adjacent to Jalan Daan Mogot.
“Then they questioned me about all sorts of things. They beat my stomach, threw me into the river, and carried on,” he said.
Left incapacitated after being pushed into the river, the victim could only watch as the gang drove off with his motorcycle and all his valuable belongings.
“The bike was taken, along with my bag; my phone, wallet, and everything else were in the bag. The phone and wallet contained my KTP, my KTA GP and GM; they were taken. There was money in the bag as well.”
