On the eve of Eid al-Fitr, Jogja’s Beringharjo Market is a common destination for people seeking new clothes. This Lebaran, two models of gamis have become trends and are widely sought after: the Sultan gamis and the Bini Orang gamis. One fashion outlet owner at Beringharjo Market, Fitri, said that by mid-Ramadan Lebaran sales for Lebaran clothes had risen by up to 70 per cent. The two gamis models are the most in demand. ‘Alhamdulillah telah meningkat, 70 percent lah, peningkatan mulai libur sekolah itu. Yang lagi ramai gamis bini orang sama gamis Sultan,’ Fitri said during a visit to her Alam Jaya outlet at Pasar Beringharjo, Jogja, on Wednesday (4/3/2026). ‘Alhamdulillah banyak, lebih dari 50 (potong gamis terjual), ya laris manis. Kadang ada yang nggak tahu, cuma lihat modelnya, suka, terus dibeli,’ she added. The Bini Orang gamis is priced starting at Rp 200,000 per piece. Fitri says she does not know why the gamis is named ‘Bini Orang’. In her view, the name is already used by a supplier from Jakarta. ‘(Gamis Bini Orang) There are belts, some with buttons. The colour trend is white and brown. Those are selling very well,’ Fitri said. ‘We source Bini Orang from Jakarta, because we already have a partnership. (Reason for the name Bini Orang) Perhaps because the wearer is a wife of a man, not sure. (Who gave the name) Not sure, it comes from the central supplier. It’s a trend this season, ahead of Eid al-Fitr,’ she added. Meanwhile, Fitri added, the Sultan gamis is priced starting at Rp 400,000. The reason for the name ‘Sultan’ is its material and the model featuring a long outer. ‘The Sultan one uses a rompi (outer), while the Bini Orang has lace and tile-like embellishments,’ she explained. ‘Furthermore the Sultan gamis is luxurious; its price is also ’Sultan’. Today’s orders are more than three,’ Fitri explained. Separately, Sari, owner of the batik outlet Amanda Raisa, agreed that gamis is the item most in demand ahead of Eid. Batik clothing is usually given as gifts. ‘Batik tends to be busy after Eid; now it’s the fashion items, the gamis. For Eid, the gamis are particularly sought as gifts,’ Sari said.
