Full Chronology of Reckless Driving Incident Involving a Calya Driver Who Drove Against Traffic in Central Jakarta
The Jakarta Metropolitan Police Traffic Directorate revealed the chronology of the enforcement action against HM (24), the driver of a Toyota Calya who drove recklessly in the Central Jakarta area on Wednesday (February 25th).
The reckless actions of the young man triggered a pursuit by officers amidst the capital city’s traffic congestion. Here is the sequence of events:
- Initial Suspicion of Officers
The incident began when the vehicle driven by HM was traveling from the south (Senen) towards Pasar Baru. The vehicle’s movements immediately attracted the attention of police officers who were on patrol.
The Director of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Pol Komarudin, explained: “At the time of the incident, our officers on patrol noticed unusual behavior from the driver amidst the capital city’s congestion in the afternoon,” he said.
In addition to speeding, officers also found discrepancies in the vehicle’s license plate.
- Chase and Driving Against Traffic
Officers then followed the vehicle. HM briefly turned the car around in front of the Indonesian Navy Headquarters before entering Jalan Gunung Sahari 4 and continuing to Jalan Gunung Sahari 5. It was at this location that the serious violations began, namely driving against traffic in a one-way lane.
“The violator drove against traffic, still at high speed and continued to be followed by officers who signaled other drivers to be careful considering the driver’s reckless behavior,” said Kombes Komarudin.
- Briefly Stuck in Traffic
The violations continued to the Jalan Budi Utomo section. There, HM again took the right lane, clearly driving against the flow of traffic.
Allegedly realizing his mistake or panicking because he was being followed by officers, the driver briefly tried to turn back towards the Indonesian Navy Headquarters. However, his escape was halted when he was stuck in a queue of vehicles at a red light.
“Upon arriving at the Indonesian Navy Headquarters, the violator turned left towards Gunung Sahari or towards Pintu Besi. There, officers continued to follow, and in the middle of the road, because the traffic light at Pintu Besi was red, many vehicles were piled up, the violator turned around again in the same lane,” said Komarudin.
- Driver and Vehicle Secured
Seeing the opportunity, officers from the Jakarta Central Police immediately took firm action by securing the driver and another passenger.
The Chief of the Jakarta Central Police, Kombes Pol Reynold Hutagalung, confirmed the arrest.
- Designated as a Suspect
After being arrested, the driver has now been designated as a suspect in a traffic violation. The Jakarta Metropolitan Police has charged Hafiz with Article 311 Paragraph 1, 2, and 3 of Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation (LLAJ). This was revealed by the Director of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Komarudin.
“He is threatened with a prison sentence of up to 4 years and a fine of 8 million rupiah,” said Komarudin.
