FTUI and Iluni build temporary housing with local wisdom-based housing concept
Depok (ANTARA) - The Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) together with the FTUI Alumni Association (Iluni) has begun constructing temporary housing (huntara) with a concept based on local wisdom for residents affected by flash floods in Gewat Village, Linge Subdistrict, Central Aceh Regency.
This programme targets 12 huntara units, with four units scheduled for completion before Eid al-Fitr and the other seven within 30 days after Lebaran.
“As an engineering education institution, FTUI has a responsibility to provide knowledge-based solutions that directly benefit society. We hope this temporary housing can help residents have a safe and comfortable place to live while reorganising their lives,” said FTUI Dean Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan at the UI Depok Campus on Thursday.
The huntara design used is the Antara Version 3 model, a development from previous designs applied in Lombok, Palu, and Cianjur.
In addition to serving as temporary housing, the evolving housing concept allows for the addition of rooms or gradual building expansion according to the occupants’ needs. Thus, the huntara can form the basis for developing permanent houses as residents’ social and economic recovery progresses.
The construction is carried out through gotong royong by Gewat Village residents, with technical guidance from the Dompet Dhuafa Independence Institute and full support from the Central Aceh Regency Government.
Gewat Village Chief Sandi Suardi expressed appreciation for the concern from FTUI and its partners.
“We are very grateful for the attention and care from FTUI and the partners who have helped the people of Gewat Village. The presence of this temporary housing is very meaningful for our residents to resume life more calmly while rebuilding the future,” he said.
Central Aceh can be reached by a 2.5-hour land journey from Lhokseumawe to Takengon, followed by three hours to the village.
Access to the area remains limited due to landslides following the disaster. The huntara construction survey team, led by Iluni FTUI Chairman Farrizky Astrawinata along with FTUI Disaster Task Force Chairman Ardiyansyah, assessed the village’s still concerning conditions even 90 days after the flash flood struck.
During the visit, the team also distributed basic food aid to residents through the UI Cares programme.
Through collaboration between universities, communities, and various parties, the construction of this huntara is expected to serve as an initial step in accelerating the recovery process for the lives of Gewat Village residents after the disaster.
