Frying pan wins design contest

JAKARTA (JP): A frying pan and a bowl for grinding chili took first and second place in a recent national industrial design contest.

The winners of the "Eating Utensils" contest received their prizes yesterday from Tuti Try Sutrisno, wife of Vice President Try Sutrisno.

Widagdo, the chairman of the Indonesian Design Council and a jury member in the contest held by the National Design Center, said only 29 of 40 entrants were fit for selection.

The "modern" frying pan by Adhi Nugraha was created to allow steam-cooking and boiling.

F Studio Design transformed an ordinary stone bowl into a stylish pestle with a wooden rectangle base.

The third prize went to Adhi Nugraha and Nedina Sari for their modified spoon and fork.

Tuti Try Sutrisno, who also heads the National Handicraft Council, said the center is not only expected to come up with new designs, but also to make an inventory of traditional works.

"We need to think about the patents (of the traditional designs), in the face of the future free market," said Tuti.

"The contest was meant to stimulate designers to find something new in tools which we have used for thousands of years in daily activities," Widagdo said.

The organizers are also holding a two-day seminar on design at the Wisma Seni Rupa Nasional building of the Ministry of Education and Culture in Central Jakarta. (anr)
