A recent report from health advocacy organisation the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has revealed surprising facts about popular summer fruits consumed by the public. Many of these fruits have been found to contain harmful pesticide residues, including forever chemicals linked to cancer risk.

In this year’s Dirty Dozen list, nearly all listed fruit types—with the exception of potatoes—have an average of four or more pesticide types on each sample. However, the EWG emphasises that the public need not stop consuming fruits and vegetables, as their health benefits far outweigh exposure risks.

Nevertheless, these findings serve as an important warning to be more selective when choosing food. Which fruits warrant caution?

The EWG analysed 54,344 samples from 47 fruit types based on the latest pesticide residue test data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The top five fruits with the highest contamination levels include those identified in the organisation’s report.

EWG science analyst Varun Subramaniam stated that this year’s findings underscore the presence of PFAS pesticides in the food supply chain. These chemicals are highly persistent in the environment and difficult to break down.

Long-term exposure to these chemicals has been linked by scientists to various serious health problems, including increased risk of cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.

Given the high residue levels on the list, consumers are advised to take preventative measures in their purchasing and preparation practices.

Although this pesticide challenge is real, data transparency as presented by the EWG is expected to drive stricter regulations for global food safety and public health protection.
