Many Indonesian conglomerates did not emerge from wealthy families. Some of them actually experienced considerable hardship, working multiple jobs and migrating with minimal capital.

From these circumstances, they developed the mental fortitude and work ethic that eventually led them to become major entrepreneurs. Here are five Indonesian businessmen who experienced poverty before achieving success.

  1. Tomy Winata

Tomy Winata is known as the entrepreneur behind the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD) in Jakarta and founder of Artha Graha Group.

However, before achieving success, his life was marked by severe limitations. He was an orphan and worked as a construction labourer to survive. As a teenager, Tomy migrated to Jakarta with only three sets of clothing and approximately 30,000 rupiah.

He experienced several business failures, including investment projects that did not proceed as planned. Nevertheless, Tomy continued trying until he eventually succeeded in building a large business network now operating across various sectors including property, banking, construction, and hospitality.

  1. Ciputra

Ciputra (Tjiputra) is recognised as one of Indonesia’s pioneering property developers. He established and expanded various business groups including Jaya Group, Metropolitan Group, and Ciputra Group.

His childhood was difficult. His family’s circumstances changed after his father was arrested by Japanese forces and died in prison. From that point, Ciputra had to live in economic hardship.

Whilst studying at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), he and two classmates attempted to offer architectural services to earn income. From these small projects, he gradually built a reputation until eventually being trusted with larger projects.

  1. Sudono Salim

Sudono Salim (Liem Sioe Liong) is an Indonesian businessman of Chinese immigrant descent. He arrived in Indonesia in 1939 seeking a better life.

In the early days following his arrival, he even spent several days as a vagrant. To survive, he began trading cloves and expanded his business network across various regions.

After Indonesian independence, he rebuilt his business and subsequently founded Bank Central Asia (BCA). He also developed businesses in the food industry through Bogasari and Indofood, and expanded into various other sectors. Sudono Salim passed away in 2012.

  1. Bob Sadino

Bambang Mustari Sadino, known as Bob Sadino, is recognised as an entrepreneur with a relaxed style. However, his business journey was not always smooth.

He once operated a car rental business, but the venture failed following an accident. Subsequently, Bob started a new venture selling chicken eggs from house to house.

He began this business by raising approximately 50 chickens. From this simple venture, his business expanded until he became recognised as one of Indonesia’s successful entrepreneurs. Bob Sadino passed away in 2015.

  1. Eka Tjipta Widjaja

Eka Tjipta Widjaja is the founder of Sinar Mas Group, which operates across various sectors including finance, telecommunications, and infrastructure.

He was born into a modest family and migrated to Makassar at an early age. To assist his family, who were burdened by debt, he began trading at a young age, starting with selling biscuits and various other necessities.

Despite completing only primary school education, Eka successfully built a business that eventually developed into Sinar Mas Group. He was recorded as one of Indonesia’s wealthiest individuals before passing away in 2019.
