From Nickel to Mining Industry Literacy Centre for Luwu Timur's Future Generation
Not only a leading nickel mining area, Luwu Timur Regency is now transforming into a vocational education and mining industry literacy hub in Eastern Indonesia. PT Vale Indonesia, in collaboration with the Luwu Timur Regency Government, has introduced strategic initiatives beyond mining operations, building future generations through education, vocational training, scholarships, and donations of practical equipment for vocational high schools (SMK). These efforts include the inauguration of the Vale Nickel Corner at Malili Regional Library, strengthening Politeknik Sorowako (Poliwako) with short-term vocational training, scholarship disbursement from undergraduate to PhD levels, and a vehicle donation for practical use at local SMKs. Located at Malili Regional Library, the Vale Nickel Corner spans 70 square metres as a modern nickel mining education centre. It features audio-visual collections, rock samples, processed nickel products, and materials on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects of mining. Noviyasss Syahriani Syam, Secretary of the Luwu Timur Regency Library and Archives Office, expressed gratitude: ‘We are deeply thankful to PT Vale for establishing the Vale Nickel Corner. It serves as a platform to introduce mining literacy to students from primary to high school, as well as the general public who visit every Saturday.’ She hopes PT Vale will continue supporting community literacy programs, particularly infrastructure, ahead of Luwu Timur’s 23rd anniversary. Marzahra Nasrul Syahputri, a student at Malili State Junior High School 2, expressed enthusiasm: ‘I’m delighted with the Vale Nickel Corner. It has broadened my understanding that Vale is not just about mining but also biodiversity conservation, land reclamation, restoration, and coastal conservation. We hope to witness these processes firsthand.’ The Luwu Timur Regency Government plans to develop the facility into a World Nickel Museum as an educational and tourism landmark. Firman Feuzie, Chair of the Sorowako Education Foundation overseeing general schools (kindergarten to high school), Politeknik Sorowako, and administrative affairs, explained PT Vale’s long-term commitment to education. ‘Politeknik Sorowako was established in 1991 with a focus on vocational education. This reflects PT Vale’s commitment to enhancing local employability. Poliwako currently offers three study programmes, all aimed at producing skilled workers ready for the industrial sector, particularly mining,’ Firman explained. Poliwako also regularly conducts Vocational Short-Term Training (VST), with two batches per year lasting two to three months each. Training covers welding, air conditioning repair, computer skills, technical drawing, and more. ‘VST participants come from four empowerment regions designated by village governments. They are all native to Luwu Timur. We also collaborate with companies outside PT Vale, including in West Java, Banten, and Kalimantan, for student internships,’ Firman added. Data shows approximately 67-70% of Poliwako students are from Luwu Timur. It is the only technical university in the region. Fitri Oktaviani, a second-year student in the D3 Mechanical Maintenance and Repair programme specialising in Mechanical Drafting, expressed pride in choosing Poliwako. ‘I’m a local (Lutim). The first reason is the proximity to home. Second, job prospects are strong due to full support from PT Vale. Facilities like the CNC production lab behind me—these CNC machines are quite expensive and fully supported by the company,’ Fitri said enthusiastically. She experiences both academic and non-academic support. ‘My hope is to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge I’ve gained at a company relevant to my field and secure a suitable position,’ Fitri added. Yusri Yunus, Head of External Relations for Sorowako & Outer Areas at PT Vale Indonesia, expressed gratitude for the synergy with the Luwu Timur Regency Government. ‘Alhamdulillah, PT Vale is grateful to be in Luwu Timur due to strong government support for our operations. Our community empowerment programme has eight pillars, including education, healthcare, economic independence, and more. We regularly evaluate and improve these initiatives with the regency,’ Yusri said. In education, PT Vale collaborates on scholarships from master’s to PhD levels. For economic independence, it works with Tabarano Village Government to develop pineapple plantations. In tourism, it is developing Lake Matano and three other lakes. Yusri also highlighted environmental conservation efforts, such as managing invasive fish species (catfish and flowerhorn cichlid) threatening endemic fish. In collaboration with Hasanuddin University, PT Vale is researching using these fish for feed production. To strengthen vocational education, PT Vale donated a vehicle for practical use at Luwu Timur State SMK No. 1. The donation aims to enhance automotive engineering skills, providing students with hands-on experience before entering the workforce. All these programmes align with national human resource development and industrial vocational education visions. Luwu Timur is gradually becoming a nickel literacy and sustainable industrial education hub in Eastern Indonesia. Local government officials are optimistic that, through synergy with PT Vale, Luwu Timur’s youth will not merely be spectators in their region but key players in the national mineral processing and energy transition era.
