Televisi Pendidikan Indonesia (TPI), originally established for educational purposes, seems to be somewhat deviating from its true mission now. We used to advise our children to watch TPI frequently to increase their knowledge, such as through the "Discovery series.

In recent months, however, we have often forbidden them from watching TPI late in the evening because this station currently broadcasts the no-holds-barred UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) program. This program is now on air earlier than previously, starting at 10 p.m.

As parents of three primary school kids, we are anxious about the likelihood of their accustoming themselves to the fighting, tainted with violence and bloodshed.

The profit side of this show is understandable as it generates fairly big sums of money through commercials. But it would be wise to broadcast the fighting while most children are asleep, i.e. around midnight.

Besides, in connection with TPI's plan to stage the same championship for the country's martial arts experts, we would like to appeal that this event be well organized, particularly in terms of refereeing, security and safety. We hope TPI will remain an educational TV station on which all parents can rely for enhancing the knowledge and intelligence of the younger generation.
