Indonesia’s Free Mudik Programme 2026, a government initiative providing free transportation for holiday travel, was officially launched through a flag-off ceremony at Ring Road Gelora Bung Karno (GBK), Senayan, Jakarta. A total of 66 buses carrying approximately 3,300 participants from 96 state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and their subsidiaries participated in the launch ceremony, which commenced at 08:00 WIB.

Infrastructure and Regional Development Coordinating Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) expressed the government’s appreciation for the SOEs’ participation, noting that the free mudik programme would reduce reliance on private vehicles, particularly motorcycles. “The President’s directive is clear: when we can provide the best service to the public, it demonstrates that the state and government are always present for them,” AHY stated.

The Free Mudik Programme 2026 achieved 116,688 participants, surpassing the initial target of 104,000 travellers by approximately 10 per cent. Participants were transported to more than 200 regencies and cities across Indonesia.

The comprehensive transportation network comprised 1,541 buses serving approximately 83,432 passengers, 99 train services carrying about 28,720 passengers, and 46 ships transporting roughly 4,532 passengers. The programme demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity by providing specially equipped buses for passengers with disabilities, ensuring accessible and comfortable travel for all citizens.

In line with environmental sustainability objectives, electric buses were deployed as part of the programme’s innovation in green transportation. This reflected the government’s broader commitment to eco-friendly public transit solutions.

Head of the SOE Regulatory Agency (BP BUMN) Dony Oskaria described the Free Mudik Programme as a tangible manifestation of SOE commitment to serve the public, particularly during the significant occasion of Eid celebrations. The programme aimed to enable citizens to travel safely and comfortably whilst reducing traffic congestion during the Lebaran period.

“The Free Mudik Programme exemplifies mutual cooperation and SOE concern for society. We ensure that citizens can undertake their journey home safely, comfortably, and successfully, whilst simultaneously helping reduce traffic density during the Eid holiday period,” Oskaria stated.

Oskaria noted that the annual increase in programme participants reflected public confidence and enthusiasm, attributing the programme’s success to collaboration between multiple stakeholders including Danantara, the Indonesian Parliament, the Infrastructure Coordinating Ministry, the Transportation Ministry, the military and police, and regional governments.

Director General of Jasa Raharja and Coordinator of the Free Mudik Programme 2026 Muhammad Awaluddin emphasised that the programme’s success resulted from genuine collaboration among various SOEs, all sharing a unified commitment to providing safe and comfortable travel for the public.

“The programme represents the concrete collaboration of BP BUMN, Danantara, and 96 SOEs in delivering direct benefits to society. This year, we are grateful that the realisation of participants exceeded our established targets,” Awaluddin said, adding that the high enthusiasm demonstrated public trust in the initiative.

The government’s overarching theme for this year’s mudik season, “Comfortable Mudik Together,” underscored the programme’s broader objective of enabling citizens to return to their hometowns safely, in an orderly and comfortable manner, and with assured protection.
