Nyepi in 2026 will fall on Thursday, 19 March 2026. The Saka New Year 1948 celebration, which lasts for 24 hours, is expected to coincide with Eid al-Fitr, estimated to fall on 20 or 21 March 2026.

True to its name, the observance of Nyepi requires Hindus to remain quiet and stay in their homes. The entire community is prohibited from conducting activities outside the house, as is the case in Bali.

Beyond remaining still, Hindus observe Nyepi through meditation and contemplation. This period is utilised for self-evaluation to become a better person in the future.

Additionally, there are four prohibitions that must be observed by Hindus, known as Catur Brata Penyepian. Catur Brata Penyepian refers to the four key prohibitions that Hindus must observe: amati karya, amati geni, amati lelungan, and amati lelanguan.

The prohibitions during the sacred day of Nyepi are as follows:

1. Amati Geni (Abstaining from Fire)

In Balinese, geni means fire. Accordingly, Amati Geni prohibits Hindus from lighting fire, using lamps, and using other electrical devices. This is because fire symbolises anger, jealousy, and all negative thoughts of humanity and wrath.

2. Amati Karya (Abstaining from Work)

Amati Karya is the prohibition against conducting daily activities, either outside or inside the house during Nyepi. In silence, Hindus can engage in reflection and self-introspection regarding all negative actions they have previously committed.

3. Amati Lelungan (Abstaining from Travel)

In Balinese, lelungan means travelling. Amati Lelungan prohibits Hindus from leaving their homes so they may devote themselves fully to worship for an entire day. Instead, Hindus remain at home, meditating with family whilst evaluating their relationship with God.

4. Amati Lelanguan (Abstaining from Entertainment)

Lelanguan derives from the word langu, meaning entertainment. Amati Lelanguan is the prohibition against engaging in entertainment during Nyepi. Hindus are encouraged to halt all forms of worldly pleasure temporarily to focus on prayer.

Consequently, there are no shops, food stalls, shopping malls, or other entertainment venues open during Nyepi. Hindus also fast, abstaining from food and drink for the entire 24-hour period.
