Heavy rainfall with moderate to high intensity has struck several regions across South Sulawesi throughout this week. Makassar City, Pangkep District, Barru, and Jeneponto have been affected by flooding resulting from the weather conditions.

“Yes, there are four areas affected by flooding such as Makassar, Pangkep and Barru as well as Jeneponto,” stated the Head of the South Sulawesi Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Amson Padolo, to CNNIndonesia.com on Wednesday (25 February).

However, Amson noted that of the four affected regions, Pangkep, Barru and Jeneponto have seen their floodwaters recede.

“The flooding in Pangkep, Barru and Jeneponto has subsided. Whilst Makassar still has people evacuating due to flooding,” he explained.

According to BPBD data, the number of Makassar residents currently evacuated stands at hundreds of people from 169 households.

“There are 545 people or 169 households evacuated due to flooding,” stated the Head of Makassar BPBD, Muhammad Fadli, on Wednesday (24 February).

The rainfall that poured down on Makassar City from Tuesday (24 February) onwards resulted in flooding in areas that are regularly inundated during the rainy season.

“Manggala and Biringkanaya districts are prone to flooding when the rainy season arrives in Makassar,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fadli stated that six evacuation site locations have been prepared by the Makassar BPBD team due to the flooding.

“Currently, the team continues to monitor and document residents affected by flooding in the two districts,” he stated.
