The Jakarta Transportation Agency’s Operational Control Division for Road Traffic and Transport estimates that approximately 4,024,251 residents will remain in Jakarta during the 2026 Eid holiday period, whilst those predicted to undertake mudik (homecoming) to areas outside the city will reach 6,653,749 people.

“We estimate that residents who will travel outside Jakarta are predicted to be around 6,653,749 people and those who will not travel or will stay within the city itself number around 4,024,251 people,” stated Yayat Sudrajat, Head of the Operational Control Division for Road Traffic and Transport at the Jakarta Transportation Agency, during a briefing in Jakarta on Thursday (12 March).

With four million people remaining in the capital, the Transportation Agency anticipates increased visitor numbers at various popular tourist destinations, including waterparks, theme parks, shopping centres such as the Tanah Abang area, Kebon Kacang, and Glodok.

“Besides preparing for those who will undertake mudik, there are approximately 4 million who will not be travelling, so the potential impact on tourist locations and shopping centres means we predict these areas will become crowded,” explained Yayat.

To anticipate severe congestion, the Jakarta Provincial Government is considering several strategic measures, including the implementation of contra flow systems, expansion of odd-even vehicle schemes, and mobility restrictions at key tourist hotspots. A total of 2,082 personnel have been placed on standby to oversee the 2026 Eid transport operation, supported by extensive infrastructure including 90 patrol vehicles, 90 tow trucks, 240 portable traffic signs, and 1,350 traffic cones.

According to PT Jasa Marga data, the peak of the mudik exodus is predicted to occur on 18 March 2026 (three days before Eid), whilst the peak return traffic is anticipated on 23 March 2026 (three days after Eid).

Regarding vehicle volume, Yayat reported significant movement during the extended holiday period. “Traffic volume projections for vehicles leaving Jakarta from ten days before to eleven days before Eid are approximately 3,671,078 vehicles, whilst incoming Jakarta traffic projections from ten days before to ten days after Eid number approximately 3,540,379 vehicles,” he stated.

The Jakarta Provincial Government is also restricting cargo transport operations on Jakarta toll roads from 13-29 March 2026 to facilitate smooth mudik traffic flow, and has opened ten functional toll routes spanning 291.13 kilometres to alleviate congestion.
