Four Iranian Diplomats Killed in Hotel Attack in Beirut
Iran’s government has stated that four of its diplomats were killed in an Israeli airstrike that struck a hotel on the Beirut waterfront in Lebanon over the weekend. Tehran has characterised the attack as an act of terrorism.
Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations conveyed these allegations in a letter to the UN Secretary-General. The letter stated that the strike, which occurred early on Sunday at the Ramada Hotel in Beirut, resulted in the deaths of four Iranian diplomats.
According to Iran’s statement, the attack resulted in the deaths of four diplomats who were at the location.
The Israeli military previously acknowledged responsibility for the strike. They stated the operation was a precision strike targeting important figures in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, particularly their foreign operations unit, the Quds Force.
Diplomatic tensions have escalated following Iran’s UN ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, accusing the UN Security Council of ignoring the incident.
“The Security Council has turned a blind eye to this serious violation, despite having primary responsibility under the UN Charter for maintaining international peace and security,” Iravani told journalists in New York.
He also described the strike on the Beirut hotel as a serious terrorist attack and a war crime.
