General (Retired) Try Sutrisno was one of Indonesia’s most prominent military figures. During his active service, he held various important positions, including Commander of the Armed Forces (Panglima TNI) from 1988 to 1993.
Born in Surabaya on 15 November 1935, Sutrisno served as Indonesia’s sixth Vice President from 1993 to 1998. His military career began with his participation in suppressing the PRRI rebellion in 1957. He subsequently held various significant positions in the Indonesian Army (TNI AD), including Chief of Staff of Regional Military Command XVI/Udayana and Commander of Regional Military Command IV/Sriwijaya.
The pinnacle of his military career came when he served as Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia from 1988 to 1993, during which he played a crucial role in maintaining the nation’s security and stability.
In politics, Try Sutrisno was appointed Vice President of Indonesia in 1993 to accompany President Soeharto. Although some regarded him as a “spare tyre,” his extensive experience in statecraft made him an influential figure.
After his term in office, he was elected Chairman of the Association of Retired Armed Forces Members (Pepabri) and remained active in political organisations.
