WASHINGTON (AP): Marshall Green, a former U.S. ambassador to Indonesia and Australia who also served as an assistant secretary of state, is dead at age 82.
A Washington resident, Green was playing golf with his son when he suffered a heart attack. He died at Suburban Hospital in nearby Bethesda, Maryland, on June 6.
Green served as assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs from 1969 to 1973, during which time he accompanied President Richard Nixon on his historic 1972 visit to China.
Prior to that, Green held the position of U.S. ambassador to Indonesia for four years. During his tenure there, the country witnessed major upheaval, including the overthrow of president Sukarno. There was also vocal opposition to U.S. policies in Vietnam and Malaysia. In 1973, he became ambassador to Australia until 1975.
