Jakarta – Sad news has emerged from Indonesia’s political and military circles. Try Sutrisno, the nation’s sixth Vice President, passed away on Monday, 2 March 2026 at approximately 06:58 WIB at RSPAD Gatot Subroto hospital. The departure of this senior figure has left a profound loss whilst reminding the public of an important message he had conveyed to Indonesia’s young generation.
Beyond the news of his passing, the public has focused attention on Try Sutrisno’s message to young Indonesians, which he delivered before his death. In his statement, he emphasised that the nation’s future rests in the hands of the next generation.
“I urge you who will carry on Indonesia’s legacy. Because time constantly moves forward, the old make way for the young. Therefore, the young must be prepared thoroughly, whatever your profession may be, but become truly qualified professionals serving your nation, visiting one another and sharing knowledge – do not allow yourselves to be turned against each other. This is a great nation, your culture is noble – uphold it,” Sutrisno said, as cited from a YouTube broadcast on Monday, 2 March 2026.
The message is considered relevant to Indonesia’s current situation. Try Sutrisno emphasised the importance of quality, professionalism, and the spirit of service in whatever field young people pursue. He also reminded the public not to be easily divided by provocation or particular interests.
As a senior military figure, Try Sutrisno had a lengthy career. He served as Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) from 1988 to 1993, before subsequently being entrusted with the position of Vice President accompanying the President of the time from 1993 to 1998. Born in Surabaya on 15 November 1935, he was known as a stern, disciplined figure loyal to the state.
At the age of 90, Try Sutrisno concluded his life’s journey, leaving behind a powerful legacy of moral wisdom. For many people, his words were not merely advice but also a reminder that leadership regeneration is inevitable.
Try Sutrisno’s passing provides a moment for Indonesia’s young generation to reflect. His message is clear: asking young people to prepare themselves as well as possible, enhance their competence, and safeguard national unity. For, as he stated, Indonesia’s future lies in their hands.
