Forestry Ministry Inspects Legality of Timber Rafts on Kapuas River
PALANGKA RAYA — The Forestry Law Enforcement Agency (Gakkum) for the Kalimantan Region has secured two timber rafts on the Kapuas River, Central Kalimantan, to verify the physical compliance of the timber with the accompanying legal documentation. This action was taken following community complaints regarding the presence of the rafts.
Leonardo Gultom, Head of the Kalimantan Region Forestry Law Enforcement Agency, stated that his team has coordinated with the Sustainable Forest Management Agency (BPHL) Region X Palangka Raya for further inspection. “If violations are found, the Gakkum Forestry Investigation Officers will conduct investigations in accordance with applicable laws and regulations,” he said on Friday (27 October 2026).
The securing operation took place in the Bajuh Village area, Kapuas Hulu District, after the timber rafts relocated from Sei Hanyo Village. Officers discovered two rafts belonging to PT GM and PT PNT, holders of Forest Utilisation Business Permits (PBPH) in Kapuas District. These meranti logs were transported from the Temporary Timber Storage Facility (TPK) Antara in Mendaun Village, with quantities of 305 and 780 logs respectively, complete with company barcode labels.
Each shipment is accompanied by a Certificate of Legality for Timber Forest Products (SKSHHK), an official document certifying the legality of forest products.
Currently, the rafts are being secured for recounting and timber species identification by the BPHL Region X Palangka Raya team. This process aims to match the physical condition of the timber with documentation data, including the number of logs, species, and origin.
The Forestry Law Enforcement Agency has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all timber transportation and circulation in Kalimantan complies with regulations, as an effort to maintain transparent and accountable forest governance and prevent illegal logging and timber trafficking along river routes.
