Foreigners netted in ID inspection
At least 5,590 people who were traveling without identification cards, including two foreigners, were apprehended in a citizenship inspection from July 6 to 7 in Kebayoran Lama and Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta,
"The operation is aimed at increasing awareness of Jakartans towards the necessity to carry valid ID any time they go out," said Soemarto, head of the South Jakarta Population Office.
Antara reported yesterday that the foreigners, identified only as a Frenchman and a Malaysian national, were apprehended during the citizenship inspection in Pasar Minggu.
The two were later released by the authorities after they were given some advice.
The citizenship inspection took place along major roads in the two South Jakarta's districts, checking motorists and people riding public transportation for proper identification.
Those who were found without proper identification were subjected to a special on-the-spot trial established by the mayoralty administration.
Offenders were either fined between Rp 2,000 (US$1) and Rp 10,000 plus Rp 500 court cost, or imprisoned for five days. (has)
