Foreigners netted in ID inspection<\/p>\n
At least 5,590 people who were traveling without
\nidentification cards, including two foreigners, were apprehended
\nin a citizenship inspection from July 6 to 7 in Kebayoran Lama
\nand Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta,<\/p>\n
"The operation is aimed at increasing awareness of Jakartans
\ntowards the necessity to carry valid ID any time they go out,"
\nsaid Soemarto, head of the South Jakarta Population Office.<\/p>\n
Antara reported yesterday that the foreigners, identified
\nonly as a Frenchman and a Malaysian national, were apprehended
\nduring the citizenship inspection in Pasar Minggu.<\/p>\n
The two were later released by the authorities after they were
\ngiven some advice.<\/p>\n
The citizenship inspection took place along major roads in
\nthe two South Jakarta's districts, checking motorists and people
\nriding public transportation for proper identification.<\/p>\n
Those who were found without proper identification were
\nsubjected to a special on-the-spot trial established by the
\nmayoralty administration.<\/p>\n
Offenders were either fined between Rp 2,000 (US$1) and Rp
\n10,000 plus Rp 500 court cost, or imprisoned for five days. (has)<\/p>",
