Rp 8 billion fund questioned
JAKARTA (JP): City Council questioned on Monday Rp 8 billion
(US$888,888) fund which was reportedly to be used by the North
Jakarta Mayoralty for land clearance of 12 brothels in the Kramat
Tunggak red-light area, North Jakarta.
Councillor Tubagus Sofyan of the council commission E for
social welfare affairs said some councillors visited the location
and could not find the 12 brothels.
"We only find the other four former brothels which we knew
since earlier," Tubagus of the Indonesian Democratic Party of
Struggle (PDIP) said.
He suspected that the mayoralty used the fund for other
purpose.
He said the administration earlier allocated Rp 74 billion for
clearance of 240 brothels in the prostitution complex which was
officially closed two years ago.
He said the mayoralty earlier demanded an additional fund of
Rp 8 billion for clearance of the 12 brothels.
The 10-hectare Kramat Tunggak brothel complex will be
developed into an Islamic center which is expected to change the
so-called "black area" into "white area."
The administration earlier said that Kuwait, Bahrain and
Brunei Darussalam will help the development of the center. (jun)

Grave move to give
city lung transplant
JAKARTA (JP): Over 1,000 graves in Menteng Pulo public
cemetery in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, will be relocated to the
Kampung Kandang cemetery in the same mayoralty next month, as the
city's cemetery agency plans to develop the area into a public
park.
Hariono Seno, head of the agency, said that the project to
turn the 4,500 square-meter Menteng Pulo cemetery into a park
would cost nearly Rp 280 million, according to the city's
official website BeritaKota.com.
Descendants of the dead buried there are required to register
the graves between Sept. 8 and Sept. 21, while the process of
moving them will begin on Oct.11.
Out of 1,003 graves in the Menteng Pulo cemetery, only 147
still have a land use permit.
A park will be developed in the area due to its location in a
strategic area at the heart of the city.
It will be one of 30 parks to be built by the city
administration.
Head of the city landscape agency, Dadang Ruskandar, said that
statues of national heroes will be erected in the parks, which
are expected to be the lungs of the city.
