Foreign Ministry States No Indonesian Citizens Affected by Flooding and Landslides in Brazil
Jakarta, 27 February 2026 – Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry (Kemenlu) has stated that no Indonesian citizens have been affected by the flash flooding and landslide disaster in Minas Gerais, Brazil, which occurred on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.
“The Indonesian Embassy in Brasilia has also issued alerts to all Indonesian nationals in Brazil to heighten their vigilance, prioritise safety, and maintain communication with the embassy,” said Heni Hamidah, Acting Director of Indonesian Citizens’ Protection (PWNI) at the Foreign Ministry, on Friday, 27 February 2026.
Hamidah noted that at least 304 Indonesian nationals have reported in following the disaster.
“Meanwhile, thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate due to damaged homes and the risk of further disasters,” Hamidah said.
According to reports, missing persons and fatalities have resulted from landslides that destroyed numerous houses. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with many residents still trapped in flood-inundated homes.
February has become the wettest month on record in the city of Juiz de Fora, with rainfall reaching 584 millimetres—double the monthly average. Heavy rain began on Monday and continued throughout the night. As water levels rose in the early hours of Tuesday, Juiz de Fora’s mayor, Margarida Salomao, declared a state of emergency. The measure was taken to expedite the flow of federal funding and resources.
