Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has provided the latest update on the fate of the Pertamina-owned tanker ship still detained in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran. As is known, geopolitical conflict in the region has forced Iran to close the strait, a crucial global oil logistics route.

“We can convey that based on coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran with Pertamina, the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta, and relevant Iranian parties in Tehran, the Iranian Embassy has conveyed the positive considerations of the Iranian Government regarding the security of passage for Pertamina Group ships through the Strait of Hormuz,” said Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang, in a written statement on Saturday (28/3/2026).

“Technical readiness from Pertamina’s side is required, including insurance protection and ship crew preparedness, before following up on the positive response from the Iranian Government.”

There are four ships owned by PT Pertamina (Persero) that were detained in Middle Eastern waters when the Israel-United States and Iran War broke out on 28 February 2026.

In mid-March 2026, two Pertamina tankers successfully exited the Middle East area, namely PIS Rinjani and PIS Paragon, while the other two ships remain detained. However, both PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) ships are not for serving Indonesia’s oil supply, but for third parties to other countries.

Yvonne added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran will continue to coordinate with all relevant parties in efforts to ensure the safe passage of Pertamina ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
