Foreign Ministry lobbies Iran to allow two Pertamina tanker ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) said the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran is currently lobbying the Iranian government. The lobbying is being undertaken so that Pertamina-owned vessels can traverse the Strait of Hormuz.
“With regard to the current situation involving two Pertamina tanker vessels, it can be said that this is being followed up by our colleagues at the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran. After all, the conversation must be conducted with the Iranian authorities. Therefore, diplomacy is currently underway,” said Santo Darmosumarto, Director-General of ASPASAF at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Building in Central Jakarta, on Friday, 6 March 2026.
“Santo said the lobbying is being undertaken to ensure that Pertamina’s ships can pass through the Strait of Hormuz safely. The lobbying is also aimed at ensuring that Pertamina’s vessels are provided protection.”
“To ensure that Indonesia’s interests relating to Pertamina continue to receive protection, in terms of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
“Santo noted that the conditions in Iran are still not conducive. Nevertheless, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Tehran Embassy, continues to pursue communication with Iranian authorities.”
“The overall situation there is still not conducive, but we will continue to endeavour to coordinate and communicate with the Iranian government,” he said.
“Earlier, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, revealed the latest condition of two tankers owned by PT Pertamina International Shipping that remained stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.”
“Bahlil said that the two Pertamina ships were currently anchored in the area to avoid the worst-case scenario from the war involving the United States and Israel against Iran.”
“As we pursue negotiations and improved communication to find a solution,” said Bahlil at the ESDM Ministry on Wednesday night, 4 March.
“Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz after its country was attacked by the United States and Israel on 28 February 2026. Iran has asserted it will retaliate against the US and Israel attacks that have killed more than 1,000 of its citizens.”
