Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has stated that the focus of the 2026 ASEAN Summit is to address the impacts of global conflicts, particularly those in the Middle East, on the ASEAN region. “So, what will ultimately be discussed is energy resilience, food resilience, and economic stability across the region,” said Director General of ASEAN Cooperation at Kemlu RI, Ina Hagniningtyas Krisnamurthi, in Jakarta on Thursday. Ina noted that the Philippines, as the 2026 ASEAN chair, will invite Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masato Kanda to deliver a presentation on the current state of the global economy. Additionally, Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono will attend several key meetings at the summit, namely the ASEAN Foreign Ministerial Meeting (AMM), the ASEAN Political Security Community (APSC), and the ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC). “The summit is targeted to produce around 24 outcome documents, but the most important are those that the Philippines will highlight, namely documents related to maintaining regional stability and resilience, particularly in the field of development economics,” Ina explained. Regarding Myanmar, she mentioned that non-political officials from Myanmar will attend the 2026 ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines. “All ASEAN countries will be invited, and regarding attendance, it will still follow the previous rules and procedures, namely 10 countries at the leaders’ level, while Myanmar will participate but represented by non-political officials,” Ina clarified. In line with the Director General of ASEAN Cooperation, Yvonne stated that the main focus of the 2026 ASEAN Summit is to respond to the impacts of the Iran-US conflict on energy and food resilience in Southeast Asia. According to Yvonne, this main focus of the ASEAN Summit also aligns with the Indonesian Government’s priorities to ensure that the ASEAN region’s response is effective in addressing emerging impacts, particularly in the energy sector. The 48th ASEAN Summit will be held in Cebu, Philippines, on 7-8 May 2026, under the theme “Navigating Our Future Together”.
