Foreign Minister Sugiono Reaches Out to Iran and the United States on Prabowo’s Readiness to Mediate — What Are the Results?
JAKARTA — Foreign Minister Sugiono has disclosed that he has engaged in communications with two parties regarding the readiness of President Prabowo Subianto to mediate between Iran and the United States. “I have communicated with both sides. I have communicated with the United States as well as Iran,” Sugiono said at the Istana Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, 3 March 2026. However, according to Sugiono, neither side had issued a firm decision yet. He noted that Iran and the United States still wish to see how the situation develops over the coming period. Sugiono emphasised that Prabowo’s offer to become mediator would require the willingness of both Iran and the United States to be present together. Recently, the Iranian Embassy in Indonesia expressed pessimism about mediation with the United States. “If both sides are willing, the President is prepared to be mediator. But if there are views to the contrary, we will leave it to them,” he said. “What is certain is that Indonesia wants to be in a position to bridge the differences, offering our readiness and offering ourselves,” Sugiono added. Earlier reports indicated that President Prabowo Subianto had stated his willingness to mediate between the United States and Iran. This official statement was issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following air strikes carried out by the US and Israel against several areas in Iran. Boroujerdi expressed thanks and appreciation to the Indonesian government for facilitating in the wake of those attacks. However, Iran believes that to date there has been no mediation or negotiations with the United States that would have a meaningful impact. “We believe there are no negotiations or talks with the American government at present that would be useful, because they are not bound and do not adhere to any outcome,” Boroujerdi said at a press conference in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday, 2 March 2026.
